Makhanlal Chaturvedi Rashtriya Patrakarita National University of Journalism, Bhopal was formally inaugurated by Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma, the then Vice President of India, in 1991 and was set up by Act 1990 of the Legislative Assembly of Madhya Pradesh. The University is named after Makhanlal Chaturvedi, a renowned Freedom Fighter, Poet and Journalist. This is a well-known name in the field of mass commiunication and journalism education. a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the Association of Indian Universities. Not declared fit to receive Central/UGC assistance under Section 12 (B) of the UGC Act-1956.

The university imparts education through its network of institutes. It has been granted jurisdiction throughout the country. It is not an open university and does not offer distance education. The university imparts education through its teaching departments at Bhopal, Campuses at Noida and network of study institutes spread over the country. The University has proper infrastructure to impart education. The University is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
